We find no justification to deny statehood.
More than 600,000 people live in the District of Columbia. As they are citizens of the United States, we see no justification to deny them the representation in our government that all other U.S. citizens have. We also see no justification in preventing D.C. residents from enacting local laws that don't require Congressional oversight.
Creating a new state from the residential areas is one solution that would fix this injustice. There are others - one being to incorporate the residential areas of Washington, D.C. into Maryland.
But if Washington, D.C. residents prefer to become the state of Washington, Douglass Commonwealth, forcing them into a neighboring state likely would be considered another example of being denied self determination.
We believe Congress should pass a bill to create a state from the District of Columbia and that the sitting president should sign it into law.
