Saturday mail delivery to continue, USPS announces

The United States Postal Service will continue to deliver mail on Saturdays, the Postal Service Board of Governors announced April 10.
Saturday mail delivery will continue at least until September 30 - the end of the government's fiscal year. The USPS previously proposed stopping saturday mail delivery in August. Package delivery would not have been affected.
Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe had said eliminating Saturday mail delivery would save the USPS $2 billion a year. As Lobby99 pointed out in our discussion of the USPS, however, the agency has mostly been able to support its operations through increased postage rates. The bulk of the agency's budget deficits are due to its requirement to pre-fund pensions for all employees who would retire before 2081 - resulting in a $5.5 billion annual expense.

USPS plans to stop Saturday mail delivery

The U.S. Postal Service plans to stop delivering letters on Saturdays as early as August. Packages still would be delivered on Saturdays. Post offices still would be open.
It's a money-saving move, U.S. Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe said. The Postal Service lost almost $16 billion last year. Cutting Saturday mail delivery would save about $2 million a year.
