What the Employment Non-Discrimination Act does
This bill would make it a federal violation for employers to discriminate against someone on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identification.
Religious organizations are exempt from this, as they are with the Civil Rights Act of 1964. An amendment further expands this exemption - prohibiting the federal government from denying contracts or funding to exempted organizations.
This bill died when the House did not consider it
This bill passed the Senate in Nov. 2013, but was not brought up for consideration by the House of Representatives. It expired at the conclusion of the 113th Congress.
